Advice for the user

All the users who have an account on this machine can take advantage of several Internet services on this machine.

First, you can receive your email on this machine. Once your account has been created, you have several email adresses that others persons can use to write to you. These adresses were given to you when your account was created. If you don't remember them because you lose the mail in which they were, you can have look at the email page to refresh your mind.

You can also add your own web pages on this server. Just put your files in the directory which is nammed "public_html" in your account. Then your Web pages will be available at the URL:<http://www.starway.org/~YourLogin>.
If you want them to appear in the Users and/or Subjects section of this server, just drop a mail to <webmaster@StarWay.org> and explain what you want.

If you need a counter for your Web pages, you don't need to install one in your account. StarWay uses WWWCount, you can use it too. To obtain a file for counting the hits to one of your Web pages, just drop a mail to <webmaster@StarWay.org> and indicate the name of the page you want to count the hits. The file will be created and named as follows:
<domain>.<login>.<id>.data where:

<domain>
The name of the domain hosting your site. By default it is starway.org.
<login>
Your login.
<id>
This is an ID you choose for your counter.
e.g. starway.org.arnaud.resume.data

The URL to reach the counter will be: <http://www.starway.org/cgi-bin/count.cgi?df=FileName>.

There are many way to display the value of a counter available on this machine. Just look at the sampler page and make your choice.

Finaly, a lot of users wonder what are the news displayed when you log onto the system. Just use the "news" command to have the explaination of each news and prevent them from reappearing the next time you log in.

StarWay Web Server Information

Linux

StarWay is hosted on a Pentium Linux Box. It is currently running a 2.4.x kernel and I haven't experienced any crash since the system is up.

RedHat

I chose the RedHat distribution because it is the easiest one to upgrade and because I prefered the way the RedHat manages the boot process of the machine.

Apache

As the vast majority of all web servers run in the world (according to the site survey by Netcraft), I am also using the Apache httpd server.

Built with BBEdit

Managing a Web site is not easy on Unix. Graphic tools are not as powerful as the ones we find on the Macintosh platform. It's very easy to create a web site with a Macintosh.
Anyway, if you need a text editor to write HTML code, I advise you to have a look at BBEdit. It's very nice, powerful and can be used for a lot of other things.
